Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery treatments in the world and has been around for over 40 years. Its reputation has lasted because of its ability to safely and predictably reshape problem areas all over the body. Dr. Susan MacLennan has almost 20 years of experience with liposuction and other plastic surgery procedures such as breast reduction and tummy tuck.
Am I a candidate?
It’s important to recognize that liposuction is not for weight reduction or weight loss. The best patients are close to ideal body weight or only moderately overweight but have areas such as the abdomen, outer thighs or hips that are out of balance to other parts of the body. These areas are typically those that have been difficult to "spot reduce" through diet and exercise. Liposuction can help clothing fit better and improve how a woman feels about her body shape, balancing proportion and restoring confidence.
Not everyone is the right candidate for liposuction, so it is essential to have realistic expectations about the type of results you can expect. If you have loose or baggy skin, stretch marks, or an overhang of your lower abdomen, a tummy tuck may be a better option to remove some of the extra skin.
Our professional staff would be happy to offer you a private, one-on-one consultation to provide you with an honest recommendation based on our experience.
At Sante Medical, we primarily offer “tumescent” or suction-assisted liposuction (“SAL”). After your target areas as assessed, we inject those areas with a solution that numbs the tissue and minimizes bleeding. Using a long narrow tube called a cannula, suction begins to loosen and remove the fat from the targeted areas. This treatment can be very effective in certain areas of the body, particularly the lower abdomen, hips, “bra rolls,” outer thighs, and upper arms. Safety is our primary concern; we will work with you to ensure the treatment meets your goals with a very low risk of complications.
Liposuction is a safe, effective procedure with relatively quick recovery time. Most liposuction treatments will allow you to go home the same day.
Many of our patients take a week off work and regular activities, but recovery time may be longer or shorter, depending on which areas you treat. The incisions are small, you will experience bruising, and you may be quite sore for a week or more. Most liposuction patients will also wear a compression garment (similar to Spanx and provided by our practice) for about four weeks after surgery to help manage the swelling. You can get back to regular activities quite quickly after liposuction since the incisions are less than 1cm each and the risks of surgical complications are very low.
