Laser Nail Fungus Treatment
About PinPointe FootLaser
The Pinpoint FootLaser is the first medical device to obtain regulatory clearance from the FDA for the safe and effective treatment of fungal nails. With proper aftercare, the nails grow in clear and healthy.
How PinPointe FootLaser Works
The PinPointe FootLaser is specially designed to safely heat and destroy the fungus that lives in the nail bed. This Nd-YAG pulse laser operates at a specific wavelength so that light passes through the nail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear— it takes time for the nail to grow out
Clinical trials indicate success rates of over 80 percent, rising to nearly 90 percent when post-treatment cross infection risks are minimized. PinPointe FootLaser is much more successful in eradicating nail fungus than topical or oral alternatives and has no adverse effects.
Commonly Treated Conditions
The PinPointe FootLaser can help treat the following nail conditions:
- Ingrown nails
- Nail psoriasis
- Nail infection
- Nail colour changes
- Splitting, peeling or brittle nails
PinPointe FootLaser Procedure
The process begins with a complementary consultation where we will examine your toenails, explain the procedure and determine if you are a candidate. If you decide to have the procedure, it can be performed immediately after your consultation. Our treatment protocol is to file the surface of the infected nail (a process known as debridement) beforehand to enhance the laser’s penetration. This process is expertly administered at Sante Medical.
During the laser treatment itself, you will feel a warming sensation and some mild pinpricks as the light penetrates your nails. Usually, two passes with the laser are completed over your infected nails and one pass over your uninfected nails.
The procedure takes less than 30 minutes. There will be a follow-up visit for a second procedure in six months’ time once the nail has grown out.
Following your Procedure
In a high percentage of cases, the fungus is eradicated during this treatment duo. However, there is a chance of reinfection because fungus is present everywhere in the environment we live in.
Toenail fungus is an infective process and fungal elements that shed from the toenails inhabit your socks, shoes, bed sheets and shower. Long-term results are best obtained by addressing your immediate exposure and environment. Precautions include:
- Drying your feet thoroughly after bathing
- Changing your socks daily (and more frequently if you have a problem with sweaty feet)
- Using a disinfectant at least weekly in bathing areas
- Using a topical antifungal shoe spray or powder
- Using an enriched nail polish specifically formulated for keeping nails healthy
